Use your own domain

Open your server at a domain you own, with step-by-step DNS instructions.

On plans that include it, your server can also open at a domain you own, such as jellyfin.example.org. You add one DNS record at your domain provider; we take care of the HTTPS certificate. Your Coursier address keeps working too.

1. Save your domain

  1. In your account, open Use your own domain on the server's card.
  2. Enter the domain, for example jellyfin.example.org, and select Save domain.

The card then shows the exact DNS record to add.

2. Add a CNAME record

At the company where your domain's DNS is managed, add:

TypeName (host)Value (target)
CNAMEjellyfin (the part before your domain)your server's Coursier address, without https://, for example cozy-premiere.watch.coursier.io

Common providers

  • Cloudflare: DNS → Records → Add record. Type CNAME, name jellyfin, target your address, and set Proxy status to "DNS only" (grey cloud). The orange cloud (proxied) does not work.
  • Namecheap: Domain List → Manage → Advanced DNS → Add new record → CNAME Record. Host jellyfin, value your address.
  • GoDaddy: My Products → DNS → Add → CNAME. Name jellyfin, value your address.
  • OVHcloud: Domain names → your domain → DNS zone → Add an entry → CNAME. Sub-domain jellyfin, target your address followed by a dot.
  • Others: look for "DNS records", "zone editor" or "advanced DNS".

3. Check now

Back in your account, select Check now. DNS changes usually take a few minutes, sometimes up to an hour. Once the domain is verified, open https://jellyfin.example.org/. The first visit takes a few seconds while the certificate is issued.

Using the bare domain (example.org)

A bare domain cannot hold a CNAME record. If your provider offers an ALIAS, ANAME or CNAME flattening record (Cloudflare does this automatically for a CNAME on the root), point it at your Coursier address, then prove you own the domain with a TXT record shown on the card:

TypeNameValue
TXT_coursiercoursier-verify=… (copy it from the card)

A subdomain such as jellyfin.example.org is simpler, and is what we recommend.

If it says "not verified yet"

MessageWhat to do
No CNAME … was found yetThe record isn't visible yet. Check the name and value for typos, wait a few minutes, then Check now again.
It points to … not to …The record points somewhere else, often an old address or a Cloudflare proxy. Correct the value, and at Cloudflare set it to DNS only.
Verified, but not included in your planYour current plan doesn't include your own domain. Change plan under Manage billing.

Good to know

  • Domains are re-checked every few hours. If the record is removed or changed, the domain stops opening your server until it is fixed.
  • If you change your server's Coursier address, update the CNAME to the new one.
  • Certificates are public records: your domain name appears in public certificate logs, as for any HTTPS site.
  • To stop using it, select Remove domain, then delete the DNS record.
