Plans, data and bandwidth

What counts as data, what happens near the limit, and how to choose a plan.

Each plan sets three things: how many servers you can connect, the bandwidth each one gets, and the monthly data allowance. Your current plan and this month's usage are in your account.

Bandwidth (Mbps): how good a stream can be

Bandwidth is the speed reserved for each of your servers, shared by everyone watching it at the same time. As a guide, for one stream:

QualityTypical speedData per hour
720pabout 4 Mbpsabout 1.8 GB
1080p8–10 Mbps3.6–4.5 GB
4K25–40 Mbps11–18 GB

Two people watching 1080p at once need about 20 Mbps together. If the plan's speed is lower than what's being watched, Jellyfin apps buffer or should be set to a lower quality (see Playback problems).

Your home upload speed matters as much as the plan: every stream leaves your home first. Many home connections upload much slower than they download. Test it with any speed test, from the computer running Jellyfin.

Monthly data allowance

  • What counts: everything passing through the relay for your servers, in both directions: mostly video sent to viewers, plus the small amount they send back. Watching at home over your local address doesn't count.
  • Shared: the allowance covers all your servers together.
  • Units: 1 GB is 1,000 MB and 1 TB is 1,000 GB, like your internet provider.
  • Resets on the first day of each month (UTC). Unused data doesn't carry over.

Data is counted in small blocks reserved just before they are sent, so the total can be slightly higher than what was actually watched.

Near and at the limit

  • At 90%, we email you, and the plugin page in Jellyfin shows a warning.
  • At 100%, streaming through Coursier stops until the first of next month. Viewers see a page saying when it resumes, and we email you. At home, Jellyfin keeps working.
  • To continue sooner, move to a larger plan under Manage billing: streaming resumes within a minute or two.

Choosing a plan

  • Estimate hours watched per month × data per hour above. For example, 2 hours of 1080p a day is about 60 hours, or roughly 250 GB a month.
  • Pick a speed that covers the number of people who might watch at the same time.
  • Lower quality in the apps stretches both: Jellyfin converts the video on your server before it's sent.
